CHAPTER TEN

Tuesday Morning, Garberville

Zoe jolted awake to a strange sound, a kind of low-level hum. She lay motionless on the bed, which felt soft and squishy after roughing it the last few nights. She realized the sound came from the refrigerator in Shadow’s sister’s guest house. Normally, she wouldn’t have noticed it, but after spending so much time in the silent redwoods, the sound seemed alien and unfamiliar.

Light seeped through the blinds. She rolled over and looked at the digital clock on the bedside table. It was good to be back in civilization again, where people kept track of the time. Seven o’clock. Ten hours had gone by since Clare had disappeared with Brock.

God, I hope she’s OK, she thought as she hurried out of bed and pulled on her clothes.

She checked the place for Shadow. The main room was empty, and though the sheets and blankets were rumpled in the other bedroom, there was no sign of him. Maybe he’d gone to see his sister. She went into the bathroom. It was fully supplied with towels, soap and shampoo. Despite feeling pressed for time, she was desperate for a quick shower after four days of roughing it. She stripped and hurried into the blissfully warm water.

Last night, she’d sunk into a pretty low place, but as the water streamed over her, washing away the dirt and grime, she determined that today was going to be a new day. Things were going to go better. Shadow and she would get her sister and then they’d get back to San Francisco.

Minutes later, she hurried out of the guest house, feeling more like herself. It was a beautiful morning. The sun shone through the trees and across the open area of the property. She looked around, but there was no sign of Charlie’s pickup truck.

She crossed the driveway to the aging two-story main house, its sky-blue paint starting to peel, and rang the doorbell. Somewhere inside, footsteps pounded, and excited children’s voices called out. A minute later, the front door was opened by a dark-haired woman in a uniform with a gas company logo. A little girl and boy looked curiously up at Zoe.

“You must be Pele. I’m JoAnn, Jason’s sister.” JoAnn didn’t use his Seeker name and she didn’t smile at Zoe. Her eyes traveled over Zoe from head to toe, her mouth a firm line, her expression unreadable.

Zoe got the impression that JoAnn didn’t care for the Seekers, judging by her restrained manner.

Zoe responded politely, “Nice to meet you. My name’s actually Zoe, Zoe Thompson.”

“This is Cindy and David.” JoAnn looked down at her children. “Say ‘hi’ to Zoe.”

“Hi Zoe, we’re gonna have blueberry muffins, yummy!” Cindy crowed and ran down the hall, her younger brother on her heels.

“Is Shadow here?” Zoe asked.

“He went with my husband to return Charlie’s truck. They should be back soon. We’re about to have breakfast,” JoAnn said and turned back inside.

Zoe followed her to the kitchen, which was filled with the delicious smells of coffee, bacon and eggs, and fresh muffins in the oven.
